One Vision, Two Distinct Practices

Anam Arbor is the parent organization for our integrative psychiatric care and related professional work. Anam Arbor Colorado is a separate Colorado entity focused specifically on Natural Medicine services within Colorado’s regulated framework. While the two share a common philosophy and commitment to ethical, thoughtful care, they are separate legal and professional entities.

Holding Mystery Without Abandoning Rigor

Kate Dowden

About Kate

Kate Dowden is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with more than 17 years of experience as a registered nurse, licensed to practice as a nurse practitioner in both Colorado and Utah.

Her first career in nursing shaped the way she understands care.

Kate spent years working in pediatric rehabilitation, alongside children and families navigating illness, permanent disability, uncertainty, and profoundly difficult circumstances. Those years taught her something that has stayed with her: healthcare cannot always fix what has happened, but it can help people feel less alone while they move through it.

That became part of the foundation for her transition into psychiatric mental health care in 2022.

Kate completed her graduate training as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and has continued to work at the intersection of mental health, integrative care, and psychedelic research, with a particular interest in how these experiences, both good and challenging, affect the mind, brain, and whole person.

One vision: two distinct practices.

R

Broader Clinical Background

Her broader clinical background includes psychiatric medication management, psychotherapy, trauma-informed care, psychedelic integration, support following difficult psychedelic experiences, ketamine treatment, and other emerging approaches to mental health.

Singer and Musician

Kate is also a singer, and music is woven naturally into how she experiences connection, emotion, and being human. So yes, there may be singing during a Natural Medicine Experience.

These Experiences Bring Together

Today, she brings these experiences together through Anam Arbor Colorado, creating a space where scientific rigor, careful preparation, safety, curiosity, and openness to the mystery of human experience can coexist.

Natural Medicine services are provided in Denver, Colorado only.

Rooted in science. Open to wonder.

I believe there is a way to hold both rigor and mystery.

Natural Medicine experiences can touch places that are difficult to explain. They can bring us into contact with emotion, memory, embodiment, relationship, meaning, awe, and sometimes experiences that leave us with more questions than answers. I don't think we need to explain those experiences away, and I don't think we need to turn them into certainty.

  • There is room here for neuroscience and mystery.
  • For evidence and lived experience.
  • For mental health and spirituality.
  • For curiosity without certainty.
  • For awe without needing to name exactly what we have encountered.

Most importantly, there is room for the person.

My role is not to tell you what your experience means or who you should become because of it. It is to help create the conditions for you to explore your experience safely, with thoughtful preparation, appropriate boundaries, genuine curiosity, and respect for your own capacity to make meaning.

I am interested in what these experiences might help us develop: greater capacity to meet difficult emotions, resilience in the face of uncertainty, a deeper relationship with ourselves and others, and perhaps a little more room for acceptance, wonder, compassion and possibility.

Some things may become clearer. Some things may remain mysterious.

I think both are okay.

I believe we can be deeply rooted in science without closing ourselves to wonder.

Rooted in science. Open to wonder.
